Plateau State University (PLASU) is committed to producing top-tier graduates who can compete on a global scale, Vice Chancellor Professor Shedrack Best says. The university is setting a high standard for its new Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and plans to strictly adhere to it, said the Vice Chancellor on August 12th.
“I am not ready to train pharmacists who will come out of PLASU and play second fiddle to anyone,” Professor Best said during a meeting with the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Plateau State branch. “We will provide everything needed to ensure our graduates are competitive and well-equipped.”
Professor Best emphasized the university’s dedication to providing a seamless and professional training experience. “We are fully aware of the demands of the pharmacy program, including the necessary equipment and machines,” he said. “We have the zeal and the will to provide everything necessary for professional training.”
The Vice Chancellor also pledged the university’s support for the PSN and other professional bodies, promising to cooperate with them to ensure the success of their training, research, and ethical standards. He also pledged support for the upcoming World Pharmacist’s Day in September.
Leading the delegation on behalf of the PSN Chairman Domjul Doptip, Pharmacist Meshach Dayol of the Plateau State Drugs and Medical Commodities Medical Agency congratulated Professor Best on his appointment, stating, “There couldn’t have been a better person to do the job than you.” Dayol also acknowledged Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s support for the PSN, which includes the establishment of the new faculty at PLASU.
Dr. Dauda Dangiwa, Head of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacy Practice at the University of Jos, praised PLASU for its proactive approach in consulting with professionals to establish a solid foundation for the new faculty. He noted that pharmacy is a demanding profession requiring significant investment in training and equipment. Dr. Dangiwa pledged the association’s full support for the faculty’s official takeoff in October.
The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is one of two new faculties approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in January. It has already begun admitting students for the 2025/2026 academic session.
The meeting concluded with both Dayol and Dangiwa presenting awards of recognition to Prof. Best for his appointment and role in advancing Pharmaceutical training at PLASU.
