Comrade Fwangshak Dawuk, Secretary of the Mwaghavul Youth Movement, Mangu Halle District, was reportedly shot dead by soldiers in Jakatai, Mangu LGA, on the evening of Sunday, August 9, 2026.

According to the Mwaghavul Youth Movement, the incident occurred following a reported bandit attack on neighbouring communities. In response, youths in Jakatai mobilised for community vigilance to guard against possible spillover attacks.

The Movement stated that during this period of vigilance, a military convoy arrived in the area and opened fire, resulting in the death of Dawuk, who was reportedly carrying out community vigilance duties at the time.

In a statement signed by Tubwot Joël Sunday, Director of Public Affairs, and Comr. Jonathan Kyesmang Yusuf, National President of the Mwaghavul Youth Movement, the group condemned the killing and demanded “an immediate, transparent and independent investigation.”

The youth group raised concerns on Why was Fwangshak shot? Who authorised the use of force and who were the personnel involved? What were the operational orders? and Why was the body removed from the scene and taken to the hospital under the circumstances reported?

“Community vigilance should never be treated as a crime. Citizens who remain awake at night to protect their families deserve cooperation from legitimate security agencies, not indiscriminate violence,” the statement said.

The group called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Nigerian Army Headquarters, the Plateau State Government under Governor Caleb Mutfwang, and relevant human rights authorities to intervene. It also urged the military to preserve all operational records relating to the deployment.

The National President appealed to youths to “remain calm and law-abiding,” adding that “Fwangshak went out as a youth leader at a difficult moment for his community. His death must not simply become another statistic.”

As of the time of this report, the Nigerian Army had not issued an official statement on the incident.

May God comfort the bereaved family and grant eternal rest to Comrade Fwangshak Dawuk.
