The Leader of the Mikang Local Government Legislative Arm, Rt. Hon. Shepshal Maikalango Putdet, has condemned the violent attack and destruction of the council’s Legislative Chamber following the APC State Assembly primaries.
Speaking at a press conference in Tunkus, Putdet described the incident as an assault on democracy, the rule of law, and public institutions, not merely a political disagreement.
He alleged that the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Naanlong Daniel Gapyil, led and sponsored thugs who invaded and vandalized the Legislative Chambers over disputes arising from the primaries.
According to Putdet, the attackers destroyed property within the chambers, including windows and other facilities, and assaulted individuals present during the invasion.
He said the Deputy Chairman of Mikang Local Government, Hon. Nungkat Euk, and several others sustained injuries in the attack.
“The incident is unacceptable. Violence against public institutions undermines democratic governance,” Putdet said.
He called on Governor Caleb Mutfwang to intervene urgently and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice, stressing that no individual should be above the law.
Putdet also urged the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress and the Plateau State APC leadership to investigate the incident and take disciplinary action against anyone found culpable.
He further appealed to security agencies to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation, insisting that public institutions must not be turned into arenas for political violence.
The legislative leader called for calm among residents of Mikang, urging them to remain peaceful and law-abiding despite the provocation.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Mikang Legislative Arm to peace, justice, and democratic values, warning that “history will judge those who defend democracy and those who seek to undermine it for political gain.”
