The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has fixed Tuesday, 9th September 2026 for the conduct of Local Government Council elections across the 17 local government areas of Plateau State.
The Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Plangji Cishak, made this known on Thursday during a press briefing in Jos, where he formally announced a review of the election timetable earlier issued by the Commission.
According to him, the revised timetable was introduced in line with the PLASIEC Law 2024, the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), and the Electoral Act 2022, to ensure transparency, legal compliance and a credible electoral process.
Mr. Cishak explained that the Notice of Election had already been issued in September 2025 in accordance with the law, which empowers the Commission to give notice not later than 360 days before the date of the election.
He further stated that elections into local government offices must be conducted not earlier than 90 days before the expiration of the tenure of the current office holders, making 9th September 2026 the latest lawful date for the exercise.
“The elections shall be conducted in all the 17 local government councils of Plateau State on Tuesday, 9th September 2026, between 8:00am and 3:00pm,” Cishak said.
As part of the adjustments announced by PLASIEC, the following key activities have been rescheduled:
Verification and screening of Chairmanship candidates:
March 23 – 24, 2026
Verification and screening of Councillorship candidates:
March 25 – 28, 2026
Publication of list of qualified candidates:
March 30, 2026
Receipt of appeals:
March 31, 2026
Hearing of appeals:
April 1, 2026
Publication of final list of nominated candidates:
April 9, 2026
Commencement of campaigns:
April 11, 2026
Last day for withdrawal of candidates:
May 30, 2026 (unchanged)
Mr. Plangji Cishak urged all political parties to strictly adhere to the revised timetable and ensure that their internal party processes, including primaries and nominations, are conducted democratically and peacefully.
He also assured Plateau residents that PLASIEC remains fully committed to delivering free, fair, credible and inclusive elections at the grassroots level.
“The Commission will continue to work with all stakeholders to ensure a transparent and well-coordinated electoral process that reflects the will of the people of Plateau State,” he said.
